How do I create a Google App Password?

Because Mail Memories runs entirely on your own computer, it connects directly to Google using an official App Password. Think of it like a secure spare key—you never enter your real Google password into the app.

1

Make sure 2-Step Verification ↗ is turned on for your Google account (most accounts already are).

2

Open Google App Passwords ↗, type “Mail Memories” as the app name, and click Create.

3

Copy the generated 16-character passcode and paste it into the app (spaces don’t matter).

You remain in total control. The passcode is kept in memory only while the app runs and you can revoke it anytime from your Google settings with one click.

How long does a full download take?

It depends on how many years of emails you have and your local internet connection. If you’ve had your Gmail address since 2006 and received thousands of family photos over the decades, downloading them in full resolution can take several hours. I recommend plugging your computer into power, starting the download, and letting the app do its magic in the background while you go about your day.

What if my computer goes to sleep or loses internet?

No problem, Mail Memories keeps track of its progress. If your computer goes to sleep, your internet drops, or you accidentally close the app, simply open it back up. It will automatically resume the download exactly where it left off.

Where do my downloaded photos go?

The app creates a folder called “Mail Memories” in your Pictures folder. Inside, it organizes everything by year (e.g., 2004, 2005, 2006) so you can easily import them into Apple Photos, Windows Photos, or keep them neatly archived as files.

I purchased an unlock, but my app is still showing as locked.

Don’t worry, sometimes it takes a few seconds for the billing system (Stripe) to notify the app that your payment was successful. Try completely closing the app and opening it again, this forces a quick refresh. If your email is still showing locked after a minute, email me and I’ll unlock it for you immediately.

How do I use the Mail Memories gift code I received?

Download and run Mail Memories on your computer. Follow the onscreen prompts to run a free scan. When the scan completes, click the gift code redemption link near the bottom of the screen. Paste your code in the box to instantly unlock your account. There’s no payment or credit card required on your end.

How do I uninstall the app?

Mac: Open your Applications folder and drag Mail Memories to the Trash.
Windows: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, find Mail Memories, and click Uninstall.

Note: Uninstalling the app will not delete the photos you’ve already downloaded. Those are safely stored in your Pictures folder.
